The National Liberal Party (NLP) has strongly condemned the killings and burning of houses in Thangilani and Musenge areas of Mutha Ward, Kitui South Constituency, incidents reportedly carried out by Somali pastoralists. The violence has left over 100 families displaced, with residents now living in fear and uncertainty.
Addressing the press in Kitui, NLP Kitui County Secretary General Jemima Kanini rebuked the attacks and decried what she termed as a lack of political goodwill and decisive action from Kitui’s elected leaders. She said leaders had abandoned the people of Mutha at a time when they needed protection the most.
“It is a constitutional right for the people of Mutha, and specifically the Katumbi area, to be provided with security. We cannot allow our citizens to continue living under siege while leaders remain silent,” said Kanini.
The party, which maintains an office in Kitui South, called on security agencies to move swiftly and restore calm in the affected areas. NLP also urged the national government to deploy adequate security personnel to safeguard residents and prevent further displacement.
The clashes between Somali herders and locals over grazing land have persisted in parts of Kitui South, raising concern over recurring cycles of violence that disrupt lives and livelihoods in the region.
