A Nairobi man will spend two months in prison or pay a fine of Ksh.30,000 after failing to settle a hotel bill amounting to Ksh.22,760, which he allegedly incurred during a night of heavy partying.
According to court records, the man, identified as Omondi, reportedly walked into a city restaurant and ordered food, alcoholic drinks, and bottled water for himself and several lady friends. The fun-filled night quickly turned costly after the bill ballooned to Ksh.22,760.
The court heard that Omondi attempted to leave without paying the amount, prompting the hotel management to alert authorities.
In his defense, Omondi pleaded for leniency, telling the court that he became intoxicated and overwhelmed by the number of ladies surrounding him, each demanding more drinks.
“I became so high and was surrounded by many ladies, each asking for drinks,” he told the court.
He further claimed that upon sobering up, he discovered suspicious mobile loan transactions on his phone and was shocked by how the debts had accumulated.
The magistrate, however, ruled that intoxication was not a valid excuse for failing to pay the hotel bill and sentenced him to two months in jail or a Ksh.30,000 fine.
