Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has sensationally claimed that Members of Parliament received payments to support the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, reopening debate over one of the most consequential parliamentary votes in recent Kenyan history.
Speaking during an ODM grassroots meeting in Malava Constituency attended by ODM leader and Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, Junet alleged that money was distributed to lawmakers during the 2024 impeachment process. He further claimed that the funds were coordinated by an “accounting officer,” whom he identified as Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot. The allegations have not been independently verified, and no evidence was presented to substantiate the claims.
Junet’s remarks are among the strongest public assertions yet from a senior politician suggesting that financial inducements may have influenced Parliament’s decision to remove Gachagua from office. His comments have reignited questions about the integrity of the impeachment vote, which saw an overwhelming majority of MPs and senators support the motion against the former Deputy President.
The Minority Leader made the remarks while rallying ODM supporters after the recent Malava by-election, where the party backed the broad-based consensus candidate, David Ndakwa of UDA. He said the outcome demonstrated the strength of the ODM-UDA working arrangement and declared that ODM would field the running mate to President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Junet also dismissed any possibility of ODM aligning itself with Rigathi Gachagua ahead of the next election, insisting the party would remain firmly within the broad-based political formation led by President Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Gachagua was impeached in October 2024 after both the National Assembly and the Senate voted to remove him from office, with Parliament citing constitutional violations and gross misconduct. The impeachment was later upheld through the legal process.
Junet’s latest claims are expected to trigger fresh political debate, with pressure likely to mount on those mentioned to respond to the allegations and clarify whether any investigations should be pursued.
