Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi has publicly endorsed Kitui Woman Representative Dr Irene Kasalu’s bid for the Kitui governorship in the 2027 General Election, handing her campaign a significant political boost.
The endorsement was made on Saturday during the burial of the late William Musili Munyambu Kalisasi in Mwingi, where Wiper Party leader was accompanied by Mr Mulyungi, Dr Kasalu and other leaders.

Mr Mulyungi declared his support for Dr Kasalu’s quest to succeed Governor , becoming the latest elected leader from Kitui County to publicly back her gubernatorial bid.
The endorsement comes as political activity in Kitui begins to gather pace ahead of the 2027 General Election, with leaders increasingly positioning themselves and building alliances.
Speaking during the burial, Mr Mulyungi said he had fallen out with Kitui Governor Julius Malombe after the county government allegedly removed Dr Mumo from his position at Mwingi Level 4 Hospital.

Addressing Wiper leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, the Mwingi Central MP declared that he had severed political ties with the governor over the matter and urged Dr Irene Kasalu, should she win the 2027 gubernatorial election, to make the reinstatement of Dr Mumo to the hospital’s administration one of her first actions in office.

In a brief message after the event, Mr Kalonzo congratulated the two leaders and urged them to work together for the unity and development of Kitui County.
The Wiper leader later shifted his attention to national issues, raising concerns over the conduct of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election. He accused the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) of failing to curb alleged electoral malpractice, including bribery and voter intimidation.
Mr Kalonzo warned that the commission must uphold integrity and independence in the management of elections, saying public confidence in the electoral body would depend on its handling of upcoming by-elections and preparations for the 2027 General Election.

Mr Mulyungi’s endorsement is expected to strengthen Dr Kasalu’s gubernatorial campaign as the race to succeed Governor Malombe gradually takes shape, with political observers expecting more declarations and alliances in the coming months.
