A secondary school in has been closed indefinitely following a suspected disease outbreak that has affected dozens of students.

Mbooni Girls High School, located in Mbooni West Sub-County, was shut down after learners began reporting symptoms linked to stomach-related illness, including diarrhoea and acute abdominal pain.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the first cases were reported last Friday, with the condition quickly spreading among students in the days that followed. The rising number of affected learners prompted concern among school administrators and local health officials.

“The situation escalated over the weekend, with more students showing similar symptoms, forcing urgent consultations with relevant authorities,” a source said.

Following the consultations, the school administration resolved to suspend learning indefinitely as a precautionary measure to contain the situation and allow health teams to assess and manage the outbreak.

Health officials are expected to conduct further investigations to establish the cause of the illness, even as efforts to ensure the safety of students continue.

The closure comes at a time when the country is grappling with transport disruptions, as the Matatu Owners Association strike entered its second day. The protest, driven by concerns over rising fuel prices, has affected movement across several regions, potentially complicating travel arrangements for students returning home.

Parents and guardians have since been advised to make appropriate arrangements to pick their children as authorities work to restore normalcy at the institution.
