Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i stirred political intrigue and excitement in Kitui County during his Friday visit to Katulani, Kitui Central Constituency. The trip, initially to condole with the family of his long-serving bodyguard Christopher Wambua, turned into a spectacle that had locals buzzing about his 2027 presidential ambitions.

Matiang’i, who recently announced his intent to vie for the presidency, used the occasion to connect with the people in a style reminiscent of grassroots campaigning. Wambua, who served as his bodyguard for a decade, passed away in September, and Matiang’i’s presence in Ukambani drew significant attention.
The former CS made several stops along the Kitui-Machakos road, where he mingled with locals, greeted hawkers, and bought fruits and other commodities from roadside vendors. His cheerful demeanor and willingness to engage with ordinary citizens only added to the speculation about his growing political strategy.

Matiang’i’s tour of Kitui—widely considered the stronghold of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka—has sparked debate about a looming political showdown. Kalonzo, another prominent figure eyeing the presidency, has long dominated the region’s politics, making Matiang’i’s visit both bold and strategic.

The ex-CS has been making significant moves to bolster his 2027 bid, including hiring Canadian lobbying powerhouse Dickens & Madson to support his campaign. Public records reveal Matiang’i made an initial payment of $65,000 (Ksh 8.4 million) and committed to a retainer of $250,000 (Ksh 32.3 million).
While Matiang’i works to rally his base, other contenders, including Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, have also thrown their hats into the ring, setting the stage for what promises to be an intense race to succeed President William Ruto.
Matiang’i’s visit has not only reignited his connection with Kenyans but also sent a clear message to his political rivals: the race for State House is on, and he’s in it to win.
