Kitui Pastoral Centre was abuzz with intellectual enthusiasm as more than 100 mathematics teachers from Catholic-sponsored secondary schools in Kitui Diocese convened for a one-day seminar aimed at refining their teaching strategies. The event, facilitated by Peter Ndichu from St. Francis Mang’u Girls, sought to equip educators with innovative methodologies to make mathematics more comprehensible and engaging for students.

The seminar commenced on a spiritual note, with a Holy Mass led by His Lordship, Rt. Rev. Joseph Mwongela. Addressing the attendees, Bishop Mwongela underscored the immense responsibility teachers bear in shaping young minds. “Be gentle with students and teach step by step until they understand, avoiding overly complex methods,” he advised, stressing the importance of patience and simplicity in instruction.

In his homily, the bishop implored educators to be catalysts of both academic excellence and personal development. “If something is already complicated, make it simple; do not complicate it further. We can always find simpler ways to do things,” he said, encouraging teachers to demystify mathematics and inspire confidence in learners.

Beyond the classroom, Bishop Mwongela urged teachers to embrace self-improvement and leverage their knowledge for personal growth. “Do not train students to progress while doing nothing for yourself. Use your intelligence not only to teach but also to transform your own life,” he asserted. He emphasized the necessity of continuous development, declaring, “You must be a moving object; you must progress, develop yourself, and uplift others.”

The seminar provided a vital platform for educators to exchange ideas, enhance their pedagogical approaches, and reaffirm their commitment to molding future generations. With renewed vigor and deeper insights, these mathematics teachers are set to revolutionize their classrooms, making learning both enjoyable and impactful.
