The Registrar of Political Parties, Ann Nderitu, CBS, has today formally issued a certificate approving the name change of Narc-Kenya to the People’s Liberation Party (PLP). The move marks a significant transformation for the party, now under the leadership of its chairperson, Hon. Martha Karua.

Speaking during the issuance of the certificate, Nderitu commended the party’s leadership for following due process in line with Section 20 of the Political Parties Act, 2011. She further urged PLP to champion nationalism and uphold the democratic rights of all Kenyans.
“This change reflects the party’s commitment to evolving within the democratic space while remaining compliant with the law,” said Nderitu.

The rebranded PLP holds historical significance, as Narc-Kenya was the first political party to be registered under the Political Parties Act. Under Karua’s leadership, the party has been vocal on governance, human rights, and political accountability.
The renaming of the party comes at a time when political realignments are intensifying ahead of the 2027 general elections. While Karua has yet to announce her political strategy under the new banner, the name change signals a potential shift in her approach to national politics.

A New Political Chapter?
The transformation of Narc-Kenya into PLP could reshape opposition politics and strengthen Karua’s position as a key player in Kenya’s political landscape. Political analysts speculate that the move might be geared towards consolidating support among progressive leaders and activists advocating for governance reforms.

As the political arena heats up, all eyes will be on PLP’s next steps and whether the party will align with broader coalitions or field its own candidates in the next elections.
