People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has firmly declared that she will not accept a deputy presidential position in the 2027 General Election if she is denied the opposition coalition’s presidential ticket.
Karua, a seasoned advocate and longtime reform crusader, made it clear that her presidential ambition is not negotiable. She stated that should a coalition fail to nominate her as its flag bearer, she would opt to run independently rather than deputise another candidate.

The declaration is expected to significantly shape ongoing negotiations within the opposition as leaders attempt to forge a formidable alliance ahead of the next polls.
Her remarks come as the United Opposition begins a political tour of Nakuru County, in what is widely seen as an early push to consolidate support in key regions. The coalition is holding rallies in Maai Mahiu, Naivasha, Gilgil and Nakuru Town, seeking to energise supporters and demonstrate unity as the 2027 race gradually gathers momentum.
Karua’s stance adds a new layer of complexity to coalition talks.

While opposition leaders are keen to avoid a fragmented ticket that could split votes, her declaration signals that she is unwilling to play second fiddle in any arrangement.
Political observers say the move could either strengthen her bargaining power within the alliance or test the fragile unity of the opposition bloc.
The Rift Valley region, where the Nakuru tour is focused, remains politically significant in the national matrix. By pitching camp there, the opposition aims to chip away at the support base of President William Ruto while positioning itself as a credible alternative government.

With nearly two years to the 2027 General Election, the political temperature is steadily rising. Coalition building, grassroots mobilisation and strategic positioning have already begun in earnest.
Karua’s firm declaration that she will not deputise anyone underscores the high-stakes negotiations underway and signals that the battle for the opposition ticket may be just as intense as the contest against the incumbent.
