A man was on Monday charged in Nairobi with publishing false information after allegedly posting a message on social media calling on the public to seize property belonging to politicians and to prepare for an uprising.
Boniface Mulinge Muteti was arraigned before the Milimani Law Courts after detectives from the Special Crime Unit accused him of disseminating false information through his X account.
The court heard that on December 6, 2025, Mr Muteti, using the username Mulinge Muteti, published a post urging members of the public to take over property allegedly owned by politicians, claiming it had been stolen from Kenyans. Prosecutors said the message was knowingly false and intended to incite violence.
The offence is said to contravene Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act No. 5 of 2018, which criminalises the publication of false information likely to cause panic or public disorder.
Mr Muteti denied the charge and was released on a Sh15,000 bail pending hearing and determination of the case.
The matter will be mentioned for a pretrial hearing on December 30, 2025.
In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations warned that spreading false information online is a criminal offence and urged Kenyans to exercise restraint and responsibility when using social media platforms.
