Kitui County governor Dr Julius Malombe has moved a step closer to delivering a major health infrastructure project in Kitui County after holding a high-level consultative meeting with officials from the Ministry of Defence at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi.
On Tuesday, The Governor met top Defence officials led by Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru, where the two leaders agreed to settle on a date next week for the official site handover of the Late Nzamba Kitonga Memorial Hospital.

The multi-million-shilling facility is set to be constructed in Mutitu, Kitui East Subcounty, and is expected to significantly improve access to quality healthcare services for residents of Kitui East and the larger Lower Eastern region.
The agreed site handover will pave the way for the groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for later this month, formally marking the commencement of construction works.

The project gained national attention earlier when William Ruto, during a recent development tour of Kitui County, pledged that the national government would ensure the hospital is completed to enhance healthcare service delivery in the region.
The latest development underscores growing collaboration between the Kitui County Government and the national government as leaders fast-track the implementation of key development projects promised to residents.

The Late Nzamba Kitonga was a distinguished Kenyan lawyer, constitutional expert, and public servant who played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s legal framework. He is best remembered for chairing the Committee of Experts that spearheaded the drafting of the Constitution of Kenya 2010, a landmark document that redefined governance, devolution, and the rule of law in the country.
A native of Kitui County, Nzamba Kitonga built a reputation as a principled legal mind and a champion of constitutionalism.

Throughout his career, he served in various public and professional capacities, earning respect across the political divide for his integrity and dedication to justice.
The naming of the memorial hospital in his honor recognizes his immense contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey and immortalizes his legacy in his home county, where the facility is expected to serve generations to come.
