Kyuso Boys Secondary School in Kyuso Sub-County, Mwingi North, has been closed indefinitely following a violent student unrest that occurred on Friday night. Reports indicate that students attempted to set a dormitory ablaze and vandalized school infrastructure by hurling stones, causing significant damage.

The school’s administration, in consultation with local education authorities, decided to send all students home to ensure their safety and to facilitate a thorough investigation into the incident. Law enforcement agencies are currently probing the matter to identify those responsible and to determine the underlying causes of the unrest.
This incident adds to a troubling pattern of student unrest in Kenyan boarding schools in 2025. Earlier this year, Mukaa Boys High School in Makueni County was closed after students set a dormitory on fire, leading to the arrest of 12 students . Similarly, Bukhalalire High School in Busia County faced closure following a dormitory fire that injured six students .

The Ministry of Education has expressed concern over the increasing cases of indiscipline and unrest in schools. Stakeholders are calling for enhanced guidance and counseling services, improved communication between students and school administrations, and the implementation of effective conflict resolution mechanisms to address the root causes of such incidents.

As investigations continue, the reopening of Kyuso Boys Secondary School will depend on the findings and the implementation of measures to prevent future occurrences.
