Kitui County is reeling from the shocking death of a suspect, Jemima John, who died under mysterious circumstances while in police custody.
Jemima, accused of defrauding Ksh 600,000 through false pretenses, was arrested last week at Kitui Park near the law courts. She was detained at the Kitui Police Station, awaiting arraignment in court the following day.
On the day of her court appearance, her family and friends visited her in the court cells. It was during this visit that they reportedly smuggled in a chemical substance meant for livestock. Jemima ingested the substance without water shortly after, collapsing almost immediately.
Efforts to save her life were futile, as she passed away while receiving treatment at Kitui General Hospital.
The incident has sparked outrage and questions about the security of court cells and police procedures. Authorities have launched an investigation into how the smuggling occurred, with Kitui Police promising a thorough probe.
The tragic death has left many in the community questioning the circumstances surrounding the case, and whether systemic failures within the justice system contributed to Jemima’s demise.
