The government has officially announced a reshuffle of Kenya’s national celebrations, with Kitui County now set to host Mashujaa Day on October 20, 2025, instead of the previously scheduled Madaraka Day on June 1, 2025.
The decision, confirmed through official government communication, is aimed at ensuring adequate time for the necessary infrastructure to be put in place. This move acknowledges the logistical demands of hosting a major national event and the urgency to meet the required standards.

At the same time, Madaraka Day celebrations have now been relocated to Homabay County, marking a shift that has already sparked intense reactions from leaders and residents in both counties.
Political Undertones or Purely Logistical?
Sources close to the planning committee suggest that Kitui’s postponement could be a strategic decision linked to infrastructural readiness. However, political analysts argue that regional power plays and behind-the-scenes lobbying may have played a role in the last-minute adjustment.

Kitui Governor Dr Julius Malombe is now expected to issue a statement addressing the development, while leaders from Homabay have already begun celebrating their county’s selection for Madaraka Day.
This change is likely to ignite fresh debates about how counties are selected for national events and whether some regions are being favored over others.
