Kitui County is taking decisive action to combat tuberculosis (TB) through an intensified focus on community-based interventions. This follows a landmark two-day Community-Led Monitoring (CLM) start-up meeting, convened in collaboration with CMMB and Amref Health Africa, aimed at strengthening grassroots TB services.
The meeting brought together senior officials from the County Health Management Team (CHMT), Sub-County Health Management Teams (SCHMTs), TB coordinators, facility in-charges, and implementing partners to align strategies for rolling out community TB activities under the Global Fund GC7 Community TB Grant.
Participants were thoroughly oriented on the Community-Led Monitoring framework, including the iMonitor digital tool, designed to enhance real-time community-level data collection and reporting. Discussions also clarified coordination structures, roles of peer monitors and super users, and set the roadmap for county-wide implementation of CLM activities.
“Community engagement is at the heart of effective TB control. By equipping our teams with digital tools and clear roles, we are empowering local communities to actively participate in TB detection and treatment. This initiative is a major step toward reducing the TB burden across Kitui County,” said Lynn Kitwan, Chief Officer for Health and Sanitation, Kitui County.
County health officials emphasized that active community involvement is crucial for improving TB case detection, boosting treatment adherence, and enhancing accountability in service delivery, particularly in hard-to-reach and underserved areas.
Following the meeting, county, sub-county, and facility-based health teams are set to roll out community TB and monitoring activities, reinforcing people-centred care and intensifying efforts to reduce the TB burden across Kitui.
Under this strategic partnership, CMMB will support the implementation of Community-Led Monitoring and TB interventions in Kitui County through June 2027, while Amref Health Africa will provide technical expertise in capacity building, monitoring, and implementation oversight.
This initiative marks a bold step in Kitui County’s fight against tuberculosis, demonstrating a data-driven, community-focused approach that aims to reach every corner of the county with life-saving TB services.
