Kitui County Assembly Speaker, Hon. Kelvin Kinengo Katisya, has gazetted a Special Sitting scheduled for Monday, 20th January 2025. The sitting aims to table the proposed nominees for the Selection Panel tasked with appointing suitable candidates for key county positions, including the County Secretary, County Attorney, and Board Secretary to the County Public Service Board. The nominees will then be committed to the Select Committee for vetting.

The Assembly’s reconvening comes on the heels of a tumultuous end-of-year session, which saw Kitui Finance Minister Peter Mwikya Kilonzo narrowly escape impeachment. The motion against Kilonzo failed to progress after it lacked a seconder, leaving the Assembly divided and raising questions about its cohesion.
Kitui Governor Julius Malombe has since weighed in on the impeachment debacle, demanding an apology from Speaker Kinengo. The Governor alleged that the botched process was part of a larger plot to derail his administration’s development agenda.

The political temperature in Kitui County continues to rise, with calls for the impeachment of Speaker Kinengo gaining momentum. A section of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) and political analysts accuse the Speaker of failing to provide impartial leadership, further deepening rifts within the Assembly.

As the Assembly prepares for the Special Sitting, stakeholders and residents will be watching closely to see how the process unfolds amidst the backdrop of growing political strife. The outcomes of both the Selection Panel nominations and the brewing impeachment threats could shape the county’s governance in the months ahead.
