A tragic and shocking case has unfolded in Killeen, Texas, where a Kenyan-born U.S. Army officer, John Gitau Mwangi, has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife, Esther Gitau, in their home on Lakecrest Drive.

The gruesome crime, which has left the Kenyan and military communities in shock, took place on the evening of Friday, February 21, 2025. At approximately 7:15 p.m., Killeen Police officers responded to a welfare check at the couple’s residence, only to find a chilling scene—Esther’s lifeless body riddled with multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite emergency efforts, Justice of the Peace Nicola James pronounced her dead at 9:29 p.m.
Children in the House During the Shooting
What makes this case even more disturbing is that two young children were inside the home at the time of the murder. Authorities have confirmed that the children were found unharmed and seemingly unaware of the horror that had unfolded in their home.
Husband Arrested at Military Base
Following an intense investigation, detectives from the Robbery-Homicide Unit swiftly secured an arrest warrant for Mwangi. He was tracked down at Fort Cavazos, the military installation where he was stationed, and taken into custody. He is now being held at the Killeen City Jail, facing serious felony charges that could carry a life sentence—or even the death penalty—under Texas law.
Motive Remains Unclear
As investigators piece together the events leading up to this domestic tragedy, questions linger about what drove the decorated military man to allegedly turn on his wife. Sources close to the couple suggest domestic disputes, but the exact motive remains unknown.
The case has drawn international attention, with Kenyans both in the U.S. and back home expressing shock and grief over the brutal killing.
Legal Battle Ahead
Mwangi is expected to be formally charged in the coming days. If convicted, he could face the death penalty, given Texas’ strict stance on capital crimes.
