The Kamba Council of Elders has raised concerns over the influence of prosperity preachers on the traditional and cultural practices of the Kamba community.
The elders, who were speaking in Makueni County today after a meeting with Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior, accused these preachers of undermining the community’s rich cultural heritage through their sermons.
The elders claimed that the prosperity gospel, widely propagated by these pastors, has been instrumental in brainwashing the community, leading to a gradual abandonment of time-honored customs and traditions.
According to the council, this shift threatens the very fabric of Kamba culture, which has been preserved for generations.”Our cultural practices and traditions are at risk of being washed away by the messages being preached by these prosperity pastors.
Their teachings are leading our people astray, making them forget the values that have defined us as a community,” the elders remarked.Despite their concerns, the council expressed gratitude to Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior for his efforts in preserving the community’s heritage. They particularly lauded the governor’s initiative to provide title deeds for traditional shrines in the county, a move they believe will play a crucial role in conserving the cultural practices of the Kamba people.”Governor Mutula’s commitment to preserving our culture is commendable.
By securing these traditional shrines, he is ensuring that future generations will have a place to connect with their roots and understand the importance of our customs,” the elders added. The Kamba Council of Elders continues to advocate for the preservation of the community’s traditions and is calling on both the county and national governments to support initiatives that protect and promote Kenya’s diverse cultural heritage.
