Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called on the Kitui County Assembly to rename the newly renovated Ithookwe Stadium in honour of the late opposition leader Raila Amolo Odinga, describing the gesture as a lasting tribute to a man who “sacrificed his life for Kenya’s democracy.”

Kalonzo made the remarks shortly after leading a high-powered Ukambani delegation to Opoda Farm in Bondo, Siaya County, where he paid his last respects to the fallen statesman at his family home.

The Wiper boss, who was accompanied by Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr., legislators, elders, and clergy, described Raila as “a patriot who fought tirelessly for justice, inclusion, and national unity.”
“Kitui should lead the nation in honouring this great son of Africa. Let Ithookwe Stadium be renamed the Raila Amolo Odinga Stadium, and let the Talanta Sports Complex also bear his name. Raila’s story is Kenya’s story,” Kalonzo said.

The call has since gained momentum among civic leaders and residents across Lower Eastern, who say the renaming would immortalise Raila’s legacy beyond his Nyanza roots.

During the emotional visit to Bondo, Mama Ida Odinga spoke warmly of Kalonzo, describing him as one of her late husband’s truest friends.
“Honourable Kalonzo Musyoka was a good friend of Baba Raila Odinga, and their relationship cannot be wiped out,” Mama Ida said, thanking the Ukambani delegation for standing with the Odinga family during the difficult time.

At the same event, Siaya Governor James Orengo urged opposition leaders to safeguard the ideals Raila championed for decades.
“Watu wa ODM, msifanye makosa ya kumezwa. We need a strong ODM — not controlled by anyone in power, but guided by the laws of the land,” Orengo cautioned.

Kalonzo’s symbolic appearance at Opoda Farm — where he arrived in traditional attire, holding a spear and shield — drew emotional reactions across the country, with many Kenyans hailing his act as one of national unity and respect.
If adopted, the motion to rename Ithookwe Stadium would make Kitui County one of the first outside Nyanza to officially honour Raila Odinga, marking a powerful symbol of his nationwide influence and legacy.
