Worshipers at Ebenezer SDA Church were left in shock and horror after a brutal attack unfolded in the middle of a service, leading to the tragic death of a church elder.

Francis Opiyo, 35, a respected elder at the church, was fatally stabbed by a fellow church leader in what authorities suspect to be a deadly fallout over a love triangle. The chilling incident occurred just moments after Opiyo had delivered church reports to the congregation, before the main sermon was set to begin.

Eyewitnesses say that the suspect, who also serves as an elder in the same church, calmly walked to the altar, reached into his Bible, and pulled out a concealed knife. Without hesitation, he plunged the weapon into Opiyo’s chest, targeting his left side. The congregation watched in terror as Opiyo collapsed on the spot, bleeding profusely.

Screams filled the church as worshipers scrambled in disbelief, some attempting to rush the victim to safety while others restrained the attacker. The shocking nature of the crime, committed inside a house of worship, has left the local community reeling.

Preliminary reports suggest that the attack was fueled by suspicions of an affair involving the suspect’s wife. Tensions between the two elders had reportedly been brewing, though no one anticipated the deadly climax that would unfold in such a public and sacred setting.

Following the murder, the assailant surrendered to the police and is currently in custody as investigations continue. Authorities have condemned the violence, urging community members to resolve disputes peacefully rather than resorting to bloodshed.

The body of the deceased was taken to Homa Bay County Referral Hospital morgue as the congregation grapples with the trauma of witnessing such a horrific act.

Police have assured the public that justice will be served as they continue to gather more details about the incident. Meanwhile, religious leaders and local authorities are calling for calm, urging the faithful to uphold the values of peace and forgiveness, even in moments of conflict.

This shocking incident has once again highlighted the devastating consequences of unresolved disputes and the need for alternative conflict resolution mechanisms to prevent such tragedies in the future.
