The Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ) has confirmed the resignation of Mercy Wambua, who stepped down as Commission Secretary and Chief Executive Officer at the height of a misconduct storm that has rocked the government oversight body.
According to the Commission, Wambua’s resignation was formally accepted during its 80th sitting, in line with the law and internal human resource policies.

Her exit comes months after she was interdicted in October 2025 over allegations of gross misconduct and incompetence, claims that placed the credibility of the Ombudsman’s office under intense public scrutiny.
Wambua had served at the helm of the watchdog since March 2022, overseeing the Commission’s mandate on administrative justice, accountability, and ethical governance across public institutions.
However, her departure has reignited debate about leadership integrity within oversight agencies, especially given that this is not her first high-profile exit under controversy. Before joining CAJ, Wambua served as CEO of the Law Society of Kenya, where she was suspended in 2020 following internal governance disputes.

The circumstances surrounding her resignation have raised fresh questions about transparency and accountability within institutions tasked with policing public administration.
As pressure mounts for clarity on the allegations that led to her interdiction, the spotlight now turns to how the Commission will restore public confidence and ensure continuity of its oversight role.
