Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Nairobi Hospital after his health took a critical turn.

Close family sources reveal that Chebukati had been receiving treatment at home before his condition worsened, prompting an urgent transfer to the hospital. While the exact nature of his illness remains undisclosed, his deteriorating health has sent shockwaves across the nation, with many Kenyans expressing their concern and support.

Chebukati, who concluded his six-year tenure as IEBC chair on January 17, 2023, is widely remembered for his leadership during the hotly contested 2017 and 2022 general elections. His tenure was marked by intense political pressure, threats, and accusations from various quarters, yet he remained steadfast in steering the electoral body through turbulent times.

During his final days at the commission, he lauded the dedication of IEBC staff, saying, “To the IEBC staff, thank you for working tirelessly and with dedication despite difficult circumstances. You are the true heroes.”

The news of his hospitalization has drawn reactions from political leaders across the spectrum, with many sending prayers for his recovery. Nairobi Hospital, known for its advanced medical care, is reportedly doing everything possible to stabilize his condition.

As the nation awaits further updates, Kenyans continue to rally behind the former IEBC boss, acknowledging his contributions to the country’s democratic space.
