The family of Madam Peninah Kitondo, a teacher at Yenzuva Primary School in Migwani Sub-County, has continued to dispute earlier suicide claims, insisting that postmortem findings and the circumstances at the scene do not support that narrative.
Detectives handling the case told Channel 15 News that from the onset, the condition of the house where Madam Kitondo was found raised serious questions.
According to a senior detective familiar with the investigations, the scene did not present the indicators investigators typically associate with a suicide.
Speaking on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press, the detective said officers carefully examined the layout of the house, the position in which the body was found, and the general state of the room before drawing preliminary conclusions.
“From what we observed at the scene, the circumstances did not align with a suicide scenario. That is why we treated the matter cautiously from the beginning and awaited the postmortem to guide the direction of the investigation,” the detective told Channel 15 News.
The detective said the postmortem findings later reinforced those early concerns, prompting investigators to shift focus and treat the case as a serious criminal investigation, rather than one of self-harm.
Family members say they were encouraged by the investigators’ assessment and the medical findings, insisting that Madam Kitondo had shown no signs that would point to suicide.
They have called on authorities to ensure a thorough and transparent probe to establish how she met her death.
Police have emphasized that investigations are ongoing and that no arrests have been made so far. Officials say further communication will be issued once inquiries are concluded.
The case has attracted widespread attention in Kitui County, especially as it follows closely on the heels of another recent death involving a government administrator in Migwani Sub-County, deepening public concern and calls for accountability.
