Outspoken Kitui South Constituency Mp Hon Rachel Kaki Nyamai is on the receiving end again from irate members of the public, after openly coming out to defend strongly the Finance Bill 2024 and voting yes at the floor of the house .
Nyamai is one of the few Kamba legislators who voted in the controversial bill even after receiving several warnings from her electorates. Yesterday, Nyamai confirmed she would support the bill adding that it was good for the country. But why has the former Kenyatta University lecture remained defiant all the way through her political career even going against the political olds in the region she comes from ?
The Jubilee member of Parliament who is on her third term, went against the olds in Lower Eastern region just as the usual lone ranger she is , but today she was backed up by very familiar names in the region like , Nimrod Mbai Kitui East Mp , Vincent Kawaya of Mwala , Caleb Mule Machakos Town and Kibwezi West Mp Mwengi Mutuse washing away the interests of the electorates down the river .
The 46-year old almuna of Kenyatta University is not new to controversy and attracts controversy like a moth attracts light and does not shy away from picking fights from anyone, be it fellow politicians or the locals or from members of the public.
Two weeks ago , the outspoken Mp was at the topic of discussion at a popular Kitui Whattssap group after she called out the group users alledging that they had to drag her name on the platform to make a living.
“Am told mentioning Dr Rachel Nyamai here ( The Whattssap Group) puts a meal on your table.” She said
Last year February, the lawmaker was in the news after she accused journalist of dressing indecently comparing parliamentary reporters to Mps, a report on Daily Nation dated February 05 ,2023 reports.
The trained teacher who is also a daughter of an assistant chief , has also had rough time with her workmates at the parliament.
In 2016, the Mp was nearly axed from National Health Committee after fellow members expressed dissatisfaction with her leadership.
The defiant Kitui South Mp is also accused of influencing the arrest of blogger Mbuvi Kasina in 2014 , according to a report by the Nation.
Nyamai has also been at longer heads with Cabinet Secretary Hon Penninah Malonza in the recent past , occasionally clashing publicly in what many have interpretted as supremacy wars.
It was only early June when the two leaders met during a Zero Barefoot Campaign organized by President William Ruto’s daughter Charlene Ruto, when the two vowed to put down their differences and work together for the sake of the locals. But with Kitui South residents pushing her to vote No, and she went against their wish, one would only ask , which intrests does Dr Rachel Nyamai serve? And whether the online threats by the Kitui South electorates will have have any impact on her voting block come 2027. Only time will tell.
