Detectives in Machakos County have arrested two suspected drug traffickers caught ferrying 250 kilograms of bhang with an estimated street value of Sh7.5 million.

The suspects — Samuel Baraza Nyongesa (38) and Lawrence Onyango Asindi — were dramatically intercepted at Kitanga village, after leading anti-drug officers on a chase that began at the Lari flyover in Kiambu County, where they had initially escaped a police dragnet.

The officers, acting on a tip-off, pursued the suspects across counties before finally blocking their black Toyota Noah (KDN 218A) along a rural stretch in Machakos.

A search of the vehicle revealed 10 gunny bags tightly packed with bhang, believed to have been destined for distribution in the Nairobi metropolitan area.

The massive consignment, along with the vehicle, has been detained at the DCI Headquarters in Nairobi, while the two suspects remain in custody awaiting arraignment.

“This seizure is a major blow to the narcotics supply chain operating along the Kiambu-Machakos route,” a senior officer involved in the operation told Channel 15 News.

Investigations are ongoing, with detectives probing possible links to a larger trafficking network suspected to be using interior counties to evade detection.
