As the UK braces for extreme cold weather, doctors are sounding the alarm over a surprising winter phenomenon known as “winter penis.” Medical experts explain that this condition, which can cause the male organ to shrink by up to 50%, is a natural physiological response to cold temperatures.
Dr. Donald Grant, a general practitioner and senior clinical advisor, states that the body prioritizes blood flow to vital organs during frigid weather to maintain core temperature. “This adaptive process reduces blood flow to peripheral areas, including the male genitalia, leading to temporary shrinkage,” Dr. Grant explained.
He further warned that during this period , penis length may appear 50% shorter than normal .

The phenomenon, while harmless, affects men of all ages. However, those with underlying erectile dysfunction (ED) may find the condition more pronounced. “It’s a reminder of how the body adapts to environmental changes,” he added.
Doctors advise men to stay warm during the winter months by wearing thermal clothing and staying physically active, which can help counteract some of the effects.
As temperatures plummet, the advice serves as a light-hearted yet essential reminder of the cold’s impact on the body and the importance of staying warm.
