Residents of Migori County have been left in shock after a routine workday turned deadly at a butchery in Ranen market. What began as a simple disagreement over missing meat escalated into a fatal altercation, ending in bloodshed.
According to area chief Phares Osore, two butchery attendants, Geoffrey Ouma, 35, and Ochieng Odhiambo, had been working together at a local slaughterhouse and butchery. However, their working relationship soured when their employer raised concerns over the consistent disappearance of meat. Suspicions grew, and the two colleagues reportedly started blaming each other for tipping off their boss about the losses.
Tensions flared on Monday evening when the employer threatened to dismiss both workers. What started as a verbal exchange quickly turned into a violent brawl. In a fit of rage, Odhiambo allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed Ouma, fatally wounding him. Witnesses at the scene were left horrified as the lifeless body of Ouma lay in a pool of blood.
Realizing the gravity of his actions, Odhiambo surrendered himself to the police at Ranen post, where he is currently in custody. Ouma’s body was taken to Rapcom Hospital mortuary, awaiting an autopsy as police launch investigations into the incident.
The brutal killing has sparked concerns over workplace violence, especially in high-stress environments like butcheries. In response, Chief Osore has urged young people to adopt non-violent means of conflict resolution, emphasizing the devastating impact of unchecked anger.
