Nakawa, Uganda – February 21, 2025 – In a dramatic courtroom showdown, the Chief Magistrate’s Court of Nakawa has denied veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye’s request for private medical treatment, citing lack of jurisdiction. The ruling has ignited a firestorm of political controversy as Besigye, facing treason charges, was ordered to remain in custody at Luzira Prison until March 7.
Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate and a vocal critic of President Yoweri Museveni’s government, appeared before the court seeking permission to access medical attention from a facility of his choice. His legal team argued that the politician’s health condition required specialized care, which they claimed could not be adequately provided within Luzira Prison.

However, the Chief Magistrate ruled that the court had no authority to grant such a request, instead directing that Besigye be remanded pending the next hearing. The decision sparked outrage from his supporters, who accused the judiciary of bowing to political pressure and weaponizing the justice system against opposition figures.
“This is yet another blatant attempt to silence Dr. Besigye,” said one of his attorneys outside the courthouse. “Denying him access to medical care is not only unlawful but inhumane.”
The ruling comes amid growing political tensions in Uganda, with opposition leaders alleging an intensified crackdown on dissent. Besigye, a longtime thorn in the side of the ruling establishment, was arrested earlier this month on accusations of plotting to overthrow the government. His allies dismiss the charges as politically motivated, pointing to a history of similar cases against him that have often collapsed in court.
As Besigye prepares to spend at least two more weeks behind bars, human rights activists and political observers have raised concerns about his well-being. The government has yet to respond to the allegations of mistreatment, but the case is expected to fuel further unrest as Uganda edges closer to another high-stakes election cycle.
With the opposition rallying behind Besigye, all eyes are now on the judiciary and the government’s next move. Will Uganda’s embattled opposition leader find justice, or is this yet another chapter in the state’s long history of political repression? Only time will tell.
