Nlp party leader Dr Augustus Muli has intensified his calls for a shift toward development-driven politics in Ukambani, as early political realignments begin to shape the 2027 General Election contest in Kitui Central.
In an exclusive with Channel 15 News , the National Liberal Party (NLP) leader criticised successive administrations over what he described as the region’s long-standing underdevelopment. He argued that despite Ukambani’s consistent participation in national politics, the area has yet to fully benefit from meaningful government investment and transformative projects.
Muli urged residents to reject what he termed “politics of poverty” and instead rally behind leaders committed to tangible development outcomes, including improved water access, education support, and economic empowerment initiatives.
In remarks laced with biblical symbolism, Muli told the crowd that he was ready to guide the community toward a new political chapter anchored on prosperity and accountability.

His statements come at a time when the political landscape in Kitui Central is undergoing notable shifts. The anticipated gubernatorial bid by incumbent MP Makali Mulu is expected to leave the parliamentary seat open, setting the stage for a competitive race in 2027.
For years, the constituency’s political alignment largely revolved around Makali’s incumbency. However, with his possible exit to pursue the Kitui governorship, fresh political calculations are emerging, and Muli’s name has increasingly featured in local conversations as a potential contender.
Although he has not formally declared his candidacy, local opinion suggests growing pressure on him to translate his national political presence into a constituency-level bid.
Muli’s grassroots influence is partly linked to his standing within the Anzauni community and his philanthropic work through the Kyalo Kya Maendeleo Foundation, which has supported education bursaries and water projects in sections of Kitui Central.
As the 2027 race gradually gathers momentum, observers say the emerging narrative in Kitui Central is likely to revolve around development credentials, community mobilisation, and the ability to deliver beyond campaign rhetoric.
