In a shocking twist to the political storm brewing around Juja MP George Koimburi’s alleged abduction, police have recovered a private vehicle suspected to have been used in the incident and arrested its owner — Cyrus Kieru Muhia, a close ally of the MP — intensifying suspicions of a staged kidnapping.

The dramatic arrest in Juja Town comes barely hours after Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, flanked by top opposition leaders, visited Koimburi at Karen Hospital, denouncing what they called a disturbing pattern of state-sponsored political repression.
But the police are now poking holes in the opposition’s claims.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja on Tuesday flatly rejected the abduction narrative, labeling it “political theatrics” engineered to whip up public sympathy and discredit security agencies. According to Kanja, no evidence of a kidnapping was found at the supposed abduction scene in a coffee plantation, and the farm’s caretaker, Moses Kariuki, confirmed he saw no such incident.

What’s more puzzling, police say Koimburi was driven to hospital in his own vehicle by a known associate, raising further doubts about the authenticity of his alleged ordeal.

“We are dealing with troubling inconsistencies in statements from individuals linked to this incident,” said Kanja. “The facts, as we know them, do not support the claims being circulated in public.”
The arrest of Cyrus Kieru, now in custody, has only fueled speculation of a manufactured drama — possibly to divert attention or build a political narrative of persecution. Police say Kieru is a well-known member of Koimburi’s political inner circle and are now investigating whether the entire abduction story was orchestrated from within.

So far, five individuals have recorded statements, but police say they have not been able to access the MP for an official statement, even as he continues to receive treatment.
Meanwhile, Kalonzo and the United Opposition remain adamant that Koimburi was the latest victim in a coordinated crackdown on dissent.

“Let no one try to sanitize oppression. Koimburi was abducted, tortured and dumped — that’s the truth,” Kalonzo said outside Karen Hospital.
As investigations continue, Kenyans are left wondering: Was Koimburi a target of state repression — or the architect of a political stunt gone wrong?
Either way, this saga is far from over.
