President William Ruto has been elected as the new Chairman of the East African Community (EAC), succeeding President Salva Kiir of South Sudan. The decision was made during a high-level EAC summit held to deliberate on regional matters and leadership transitions.

Initially, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was poised to assume the chairmanship, but it abstained from taking up the role, citing ongoing tensions with Rwanda. This diplomatic strain led to a consensus among member states, paving the way for President Ruto to assume the position.

Ruto’s election comes at a critical time for the EAC, as the bloc grapples with security concerns, economic integration challenges, and intra-regional disputes. Speaking after his election, President Ruto reaffirmed his commitment to fostering peace, unity, and economic development within the region.

The EAC, which includes Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and the DRC, continues to play a pivotal role in promoting trade, security, and socio-economic development across the East African region. Ruto’s leadership is expected to focus on strengthening these ties and addressing the pressing issues facing the community.
