Kalonzo Musyoka’s recent outreach to disillusioned United Democratic Alliance (UDA) leaders in Mount Kenya highlights a strategic shift in his 2027 presidential ambitions. With internal divisions mounting within UDA, especially among Gikuyu, Embu, and Meru Association (GEMA) leaders, Kalonzo sees an opening to align with leaders and voters who feel marginalized by the ruling party’s centralized leadership. His efforts were recently showcased at Ndumberi in Kiambu County, where he was warmly received during a local concert celebrating the birthday of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, a powerful figure in the region.

The event, which doubled as a concert and birthday celebration for Kenyatta, served as a cultural bridge for Kalonzo to connect with Mount Kenya residents in a non-political setting, emphasizing his respect for the region’s heritage and honoring former President Kenyatta’s legacy. This positive reception in Kiambu underscores Kalonzo’s growing rapport with the region, as he seeks to position himself as a unifier who respects local traditions and values.

Internal tensions in UDA have left some Mount Kenya leaders feeling neglected and discontented with the party’s handling of regional representation and resource distribution. Leaders like Gathoni Wamuchomba have openly voiced frustrations, calling for more respect and a balanced approach to regional governance. By appealing to these sentiments, Kalonzo is positioning himself as an ally to Mount Kenya’s interests, presenting the Azimio coalition as a more inclusive alternative to UDA.

Kalonzo’s two-pronged strategy combines the promise of respectful, localized leadership with a cultural narrative that highlights historical ties between the Akamba and GEMA communities. His outreach to Kikuyu elders and GEMA representatives like Kikuyu Council of Elders Chairman Wachira Kiago strengthens this message of cultural inclusion, positioning Kalonzo as a voice for unity and respect across Kenya’s diverse communities.

In leveraging UDA’s internal conflicts, Kalonzo is promoting Azimio as a coalition that listens to regional concerns and values each community’s heritage. His reception in Ndumberi reflects Mount Kenya residents’ openness to his vision, underscoring that Kalonzo’s outreach could sway a significant portion of the GEMA voting bloc in 2027. Through strategic alliances, cultural diplomacy, and his message of regional autonomy, Kalonzo is effectively turning UDA’s fractures into a compelling case for his leadership.
