Fresh concerns over the safety of women in Kitui County have emerged following reports that a woman was found dead in Ikindu River, in the Majengo ya Kavalula area near Kitui town, under unclear circumstances.
The discovery adds to growing public concern over a series of reported killings of women in the county, with residents seeking answers over the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the progress of investigations into previous cases.
Details surrounding the latest incident remain scant, including the identity of the deceased, the circumstances leading to her death and whether foul play has been established.
It was not immediately clear whether police had recovered the body or launched formal investigations into the incident.
A troubling pattern of deaths
The latest report comes against the backdrop of several disturbing cases involving women whose bodies have been discovered in different locations across Kitui County in recent months.
In April, a 76-year-old woman, Mariah Musyoka, was found dead in a thicket in Ngiini Village, Kalundu Sub-location, in Kitui Central. Her death prompted investigations after she reportedly failed to return home from a trip to buy milk.
Other women have been found dead in parts of Kitui town, including the Kalundu and Slaughter areas, with some cases raising questions over whether the victims were attacked at the locations where their bodies were discovered or killed elsewhere before their bodies were abandoned.
In June, Kitui Woman Representative Irene Kasalu raised alarm over the reported killings, saying at least four women had been raped and murdered within three months. She called on security agencies to intensify investigations and ensure those responsible were brought to justice.
Her concerns reflected growing anxiety among residents over the frequency of the reported incidents and the need for clear answers from investigators.
Who is targeting women in Kitui?
The repeated reports have raised difficult questions about women’s safety, the effectiveness of crime investigations and whether authorities have established any connections between the cases.
However, it remains unconfirmed whether the incidents are linked. Each death requires an independent investigation, supported by forensic evidence, postmortem findings and other leads that could help establish what happened.
The discovery at Ikindu River therefore presents another urgent task for investigators: identifying the deceased, determining the cause of death and establishing whether a criminal offence was committed.
Residents also need clear communication from security agencies on the progress of earlier investigations, particularly where cases have generated widespread public concern.
Calls for answers and stronger protection
The reported deaths have heightened concerns among women, families and residents who expect security agencies to act decisively against violence and ensure that suspected perpetrators are brought before the courts.
Beyond investigations, the cases raise questions about prevention, public safety and the protection available to women who travel to work, conduct business or move around communities at different hours.
Authorities need to establish the facts in each case, provide timely updates where appropriate and pursue credible leads without compromising investigations.
For the family of the woman reportedly found in Ikindu River, the immediate priority is to establish her identity and the circumstances of her death.
Until official findings are released, the cause of death and any possible connection to previous cases remain unknown.
Channel 15 News will continue pursuing answers on the Ikindu River discovery and the wider concerns over the safety of women in Kitui County.
