NLP’s Augustus Muli Opens Door to Wiper Alliance, Says Kamba Unity Key to 2027

National Liberal Party (NLP) leader Dr Augustus Muli has publicly declared his party’s willingness to negotiate a political alliance with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka ahead of the 2027 General Election, insisting that any cooperation must be based on mutual respect and clear terms.

Speaking during the NLP Kitui Summit at Kitui Stadium on Saturday, Muli said the National Liberal Party had received overwhelming calls from its members and supporters to engage Wiper in talks aimed at uniting the Kamba community politically.

“We, as the National Liberal Party, are ready to work with Kalonzo, but on terms and conditions because we are a political party,” Muli told supporters.

He said the party commands significant grassroots support and deserves recognition as an independent political force.

“We have our own people behind us. We want to sit down and agree on how we shall liberate the Kamba community. It is important that we understand each other as political parties,” he said.

Muli revealed that NLP had already initiated consultations with Martha Karua as part of broader efforts to build opposition unity.

“Just the other day, we held discussions with Martha Karua. As NLP, we are speaking the language that wananchi want. They want us to work together with Kalonzo, and we have agreed,” he said.

Addressing Kalonzo directly, Muli issued a public invitation for formal talks.

“Honourable Kalonzo, wherever you are, receive this message. The members of the National Liberal Party have asked me to engage you, and we are willing and interested in talking to Wiper.”

Muli argued that the Kamba community has remained politically and economically marginalized despite its contribution to Kenya’s struggle for independence.

“We have been neglected as a community. After fighting for independence, we have not received the benefits we deserve,” he said.

The NLP leader also criticised the administration of William Ruto, claiming residents of Kitui had not received meaningful development despite delivering more than 250,000 votes in the 2022 presidential election.

According to Muli, poor infrastructure, persistent water shortages and what he described as inadequate representation in the Cabinet remain major concerns among residents.

“The people of Kitui are saying President William Ruto has failed them. Despite their support, he has not addressed their needs. Instead of prioritising water, roads and better representation, the government is celebrating projects such as a stadium and an airstrip, which many residents do not consider immediate priorities,” he said.

Muli’s remarks are expected to intensify political debate in Ukambani as parties position themselves for possible alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election, with attention now shifting to whether Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka will respond to the National Liberal Party’s public appeal for talks.
