Speaker Wetang’ula Suspends MP Kibagendi Over Claims House is ‘Compromised’
Nairobi, February 17, 2026 – National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has suspended Bungoma Senator MP Daniel Kibagendi from Parliament until he formally apologizes for remarks made on national television alleging that the National Assembly is “compromised” and effectively “auctioned.”

The suspension follows a formal motion in the House, with Speaker Wetang’ula stating that such claims undermine the integrity of Parliament and breach its code of conduct. “Members of this House are expected to uphold its dignity at all times,” Wetang’ula said during the proceedings.

Kibagendi’s controversial comments, aired earlier this week, suggested that parliamentary business was influenced by external forces, sparking outrage among fellow lawmakers and members of the public.

“This is not about silencing dissent but about preserving the reputation and credibility of our democratic institutions,” Wetang’ula added, emphasizing that MPs are free to debate and criticize policy but must not make unverified claims that tarnish the institution.
The suspended MP has until he formally apologizes to the House to have the suspension lifted.

Failure to comply may result in further disciplinary measures.

The move has already sparked reactions across social media, with some users defending the Speaker’s decision as necessary to protect Parliament’s dignity, while others criticize it as stifling dissenting voices.

Channel 15 News will continue to monitor the situation and report on any developments regarding MP Kibagendi’s response and the House’s actions.
