The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced the death of one of its senior examiners who was participating in the ongoing Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) marking exercise.
In a statement released on Monday, KNEC Chief Executive Officer Dr. David Njengere confirmed that Mr. Nicodemus Mutua Mutuku passed away on Monday morning at Machakos Girls High School, where he had been serving as a team leader for the Creative Arts and Sports paper.
According to KNEC, the KJSEA marking exercise began on November 7, 2025, and Mr. Mutuku had been actively and diligently discharging his duties since the process started. His sudden death comes as a major blow to the examiner fraternity, the council said.
Until his passing, Mr. Mutuku was a teacher at Nduluni Junior School in Makindu Sub-County, Makueni County. Before the rollout of the Competency Based Education (CBE) system, he had also served for many years as a KCPE examiner, making him one of KNEC’s most experienced contributors.
KNEC described the late educator as “an experienced, diligent teacher” and “a gem” whose loss will be deeply felt.
The council extended its condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and fellow examiners mourning the untimely loss.
