A middle-aged woman from Masaku Village in Matuu Sub-County, Machakos County, is cooling her heels at the Matuu Police Station after being arrested for allegedly stealing a hen that was warming eggs for hatching.

According to witnesses, the incident happened earlier this week when a local resident discovered that her brooding hen had mysteriously disappeared from the coop. After a brief search with the help of neighbors, the missing hen was found hidden in the suspect’s compound — still sitting on the eggs it had been warming.

Confirming the incident, Village Administrator Sylvia Munywoki condemned the theft, describing it as “shameful and disappointing.” She revealed that the suspect was rescued from the wrath of an angry mob that had cornered her moments before the police arrived.

“The act is both embarrassing and regrettable. We cannot allow such behavior in our community. Every resident must respect other people’s property and seek honest means of survival,” Munywoki said.

The woman was reportedly roughed up by furious villagers who accused her of a string of similar petty thefts in the area. Police officers intervened swiftly, saving her from mob justice before escorting her to the station.

The incident has since sparked conversations across Matuu, with many locals expressing shock that someone would risk their life over a brooding hen. Some residents say the case highlights the biting poverty affecting many households in rural Machakos, while others view it as a sign of eroding morals and community values.

“People are struggling, yes, but stealing a hen that is about to hatch chicks? That’s crossing the line,” lamented one resident.

As investigations continue, calls are growing for women and youth to engage in meaningful income-generating activities rather than resorting to shameful acts that destroy community trust.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court once police finalize their investigations.
