Makueni County has once again proven itself a trailblazer in education with an ambitious initiative that is set to redefine early childhood learning. A historic capacity-building workshop has brought together 400 Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) teachers from Kilome, Kibwezi West, and Kibwezi East at Kibwezi Teachers Training College for an intensive training program aimed at transforming the education sector.

This groundbreaking initiative, spearheaded by the County Government of Makueni in collaboration with UNICEF, is a bold commitment to empowering teachers with modern pedagogical skills, ensuring that young learners receive the highest quality education. The theme of the workshop, “Retooling for Efficient Curriculum Implementation and Improved Caregiving,” underscores the County’s dedication to enhancing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) while promoting a nurturing learning environment.

Adding weight to the workshop’s significance is the recent milestone achievement by Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr., who confirmed all 959 participating ECDE teachers into permanent and pensionable terms. This landmark decision is not only a testament to the County’s unwavering support for educators but also an assurance of job security, professional growth, and improved welfare for teachers.

The event was attended by a host of influential leaders, including Deputy Governor H.E. Lucy Mulili, CECM ICT, Education and Internship Elizabeth Muli, CECM Devolution Nicholas Nzioka, UNICEF Kenya’s Jane Kariuki, Governor’s Political Advisor KasaMBA Kiilu, and Chief Officer Irene Makau. Their presence emphasized the collaborative efforts between the County Government and key stakeholders in strengthening early learning programs.

Makueni County has etched its name in history as the first in Kenya to host a retooling workshop of this magnitude, reaffirming its position as a pioneer in early learning development. Leaders and partners praised Governor Mutula’s foresight in prioritizing education, calling it a game-changer for both teachers and young learners.

Beyond teacher training, the County has forged a strategic alliance with UNICEF to implement a series of transformative programs, including health and nutrition initiatives, school feeding programs, digital learning advancements, kitchen garden projects, and social protection strategies. These efforts are geared towards fostering holistic child development, ensuring that children not only receive quality education but also grow up in a supportive and nurturing environment.

This workshop is more than just a training session—it marks the dawn of a new era in early childhood education in Makueni. With a strong, well-equipped teaching workforce, the County is laying a firm foundation for future generations, setting the pace for other counties to follow. The movement for a brighter future in education has begun, and Makueni is leading the charge!
