The leadership of the powerful Budget and Appropriations Committee has changed hands after Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi was elected chair, replacing Ndindi Nyoro, who has been at the center of budget allocation controversies. Atandi will be deputized by Endebes MP Robert Pukose in what is seen as a major shake-up in Parliament.
Nyoro’s removal follows allegations of bias in budget allocations, with critics accusing him of diverting funds to his Kiharu Constituency and Murang’a County at large. Suna East MP Junet Mohammed recently tore into Nyoro on the floor of the House, questioning why MPs were taken for benchmarking trips to Kiharu while other regions struggled with inadequate funding.
Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah also weighed in, exposing how public participation in the budget-making process had been manipulated, leading to skewed allocations that favored certain constituencies at the expense of others.
With Atandi now at the helm, the big question remains—will he correct these alleged imbalances or will the same script play out with new actors?
