Kitui County Finance Minister Peter Mwikya Kilonzo is one step closer to facing impeachment after the County Assembly voted overwhelmingly to initiate the process. Out of the 45 members present during the heated session, 32 MCAs supported the motion, 12 opposed it, and one abstained.
The motion, tabled by a section of MCAs who accused Kilonzo of financial mismanagement and failing to prioritize development projects, has now paved the way for a special committee to investigate the claims. The committee, comprising members of the assembly, has been given 10 days to conduct a thorough inquiry and present its findings on the floor of the house.
Allegations and Political Tensions
The accusations against Kilonzo include alleged delays in payments to contractors, misuse of public funds, and stalling key projects meant to benefit Kitui residents. Proponents of the motion argue that his removal is crucial to restoring accountability within Governor Julius Malombe’s administration.
“This is not about politics but about ensuring Kitui residents get the services they deserve,” stated one MCA who supported the motion.
However, Kilonzo’s allies have dismissed the move as a politically motivated scheme aimed at undermining Governor Malombe’s leadership. “The allegations are baseless, and the truth will come out during the investigations,” said a close associate of Kilonzo.
What’s Next?
The formation of the investigative committee marks the second phase of the impeachment process. Within 10 days, the committee will gather evidence, hear testimonies, and compile a report detailing their findings.
Once the report is tabled in the assembly, MCAs will convene again to vote on its recommendations. Should the assembly adopt the report and proceed with the impeachment, the matter will move to the next constitutional steps.
This development casts a spotlight on Governor Julius Malombe’s administration, which has been grappling with increased scrutiny over resource management and governance issues.
Public Reaction
The public remains divided over the issue, with some applauding the assembly for holding leaders accountable, while others see it as a distraction from more pressing county challenges.
For now, all eyes are on the special committee’s report and the political maneuvers that will unfold in the coming days. Channel 15 News will keep you updated on this developing story.
