A police officer attached to Wundanyi Member of Parliament Hon. Danson Mwashako Mwakuwona has been found dead in what authorities are investigating as a suspected suicide incident in Nairobi’s Kasarani area.
The officer, identified as Police Constable David Sigfrid Ng’ang’a of the Diplomatic Police Unit, was discovered inside his rented bedsitter near Mount Olive School along Sports View Drive on Tuesday afternoon.
According to a police report, residents raised the alarm after hearing a loud gunshot-like sound emanating from a residential building located about one kilometre from Kasarani Police Station.
Concerned members of the public traced the source of the sound to House B14 and discovered that the occupant was unresponsive. Police officers from Kasarani Police Station, accompanied by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and Scene of Crime personnel, were dispatched to the scene.
Preliminary investigations established that the house had been locked from the inside. Officers were forced to break open the door after efforts to gain access proved unsuccessful.
Upon entering the room, investigators found the officer seated and leaning against a wall with an apparent gunshot wound. A Jericho pistol loaded with fourteen rounds of 9mm ammunition was recovered from his right hand, while one spent cartridge was found at the scene.
Further investigations led to the recovery of official documents identifying the deceased as a member of the Diplomatic Police Unit who was attached to the office of Wundanyi MP Hon. Danson Mwashako Mwakuwona.
Crime Scene Investigation officers processed and documented the scene before the body was moved to the Kenyatta University Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted.
Authorities have not yet disclosed whether the officer left behind a note or what may have led to the tragic incident. Detectives attached to DCI Kasarani have launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the mental health challenges facing security officers, with stakeholders continuing to advocate for enhanced counselling and psychosocial support services within the National Police Service.
Police have urged the public to refrain from speculation as investigations continue.
