Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has made a bold move in handling the long-standing territorial dispute with neighboring Makueni County, signaling a shift in how county boundaries will be resolved in Kenya. In a high-profile meeting with Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, the two leaders agreed to leave the fate of the contentious border issue in the hands of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), pending its full constitution.

This announcement comes amid rising tensions over land demarcation in the Lower Eastern region, where Machakos and Makueni residents have clashed over land ownership, tax revenues, and service provision. The move to involve the IEBC could either calm or ignite fresh political debates, especially with the 2027 elections approaching.

Machakos as Nairobi’s ‘Bedroom’—A Strategic Housing Hub
While addressing the issue, Governor Ndeti also emphasized Machakos’ growing importance as Nairobi’s “bedroom,” with the county poised to become the capital’s go-to housing destination. The CS was in town to inspect the near-completion of 220 affordable housing units, a project that aligns with President William Ruto’s housing agenda.

“As the bedroom of the Capital City, Machakos County remains a strategic location for providing housing solutions to meet the growing demand for homes in the wake of rapid urbanization,” Wavinya remarked, underscoring her administration’s push to attract more investors in the real estate sector.

A New Era in Land Management?
Governor Ndeti also revealed that her administration had intensified efforts to streamline land administration by establishing and inspecting new land registries in Mavoko and Kithimani. This move is expected to enhance service delivery and promote transparency in land dealings—historically a hotbed of corruption and disputes.

With Machakos increasingly becoming a key player in Kenya’s housing and urban development plans, Wavinya’s calculated diplomacy on the border dispute and her focus on real estate development could define her political legacy. Will this bold stance bring lasting solutions or open new battlefronts? Time will tell.
