Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi has been elected as the new Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG), replacing Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, whose term has ended. Abdullahi’s election ushers in a new leadership phase for the CoG, which represents the interests of all 47 county governments.

In the same election, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga was chosen as the Deputy Chairperson. Kahiga’s election reflects the Council’s intention to maintain a balanced leadership team as it continues to advocate for devolution in Kenya.
Governor Waiguru, who served as CoG Chair from 2022, played a key role in pushing for increased county funding and strengthened county autonomy. As Governor Abdullahi steps into the role, the focus will be on ensuring counties receive more resources and greater decision-making powers to advance development across the nation.
