A tragic road accident occurred early this morning along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, where a Naekana Sacco Matatu traveling from Taveta to Nairobi collided with a lorry. The crash, which took place around 3am near Malili, left two people confirmed dead, while several others were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

The grisly incident unfolded when the Naekana Matatu, a 14-seater public service vehicle, rammed into the rear of a slow-moving lorry. The impact of the collision caused severe damage to the front of the matatu, with passengers trapped inside the wreckage.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud bang followed by the sight of the mangled vehicle, which was scattered across the highway. Emergency response teams, including the Kenya Red Cross and traffic police, arrived swiftly at the scene to assist with rescue operations and secure the area.

Two passengers were confirmed dead on the spot, while several others were quickly rushed to nearby hospitals in critical condition. The identities of the deceased have not yet been disclosed, and police are working to notify the families.
“The crash was so intense. The matatu was badly damaged at the front, and it was a terrible scene,” said a local resident who witnessed the aftermath.
Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the accident, but initial investigations suggest the possibility of driver fatigue or distraction. Traffic along the busy highway was disrupted for several hours as authorities worked to clear the wreckage and restore normal flow.
This incident has once again raised concerns about road safety, particularly along the Nairobi-Mombasa route, which is notorious for accidents involving public service vehicles. Local leaders and transport officials have continued to call for stricter enforcement of road safety laws to reduce the rising number of fatalities.
