A tragic road accident has claimed three lives and left several others critically injured near Makele Shopping Centre in Ikanga/Kyatune Ward, along the busy Kibwezi–Kitui highway.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred when a Toyota Prado traveling from Kitui suffered a sudden tire burst, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The SUV, which had four adults and an infant on board, rolled several times before crashing off the road.

A woman and an infant died on the spot, while a third victim succumbed to injuries shortly after the crash. The remaining occupants sustained severe injuries and were rushed to Kitui County Referral Hospital for emergency medical attention. Their current condition remains critical.

The devastating incident has once again spotlighted the increasing cases of road carnage along the Kibwezi–Kitui stretch, often criticized for its sharp bends and high-speed traffic.

Among the leaders who arrived at the scene was Senator for Kitui County and Senate Deputy Minority Leader Hon. Enoch Kiio Wambua, who expressed deep sorrow and called for urgent action on road safety.

“This is a heartbreaking loss. I urge all drivers to exercise utmost caution and strictly observe traffic regulations. Reckless driving must stop—it is costing us precious lives,” said Senator Wambua.

The Senator also condoled with the bereaved families and wished a swift recovery to those admitted in hospital. He further urged transport authorities to conduct regular vehicle inspections and enforce traffic laws more stringently to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Local police have commenced investigations into the crash as calls grow louder for immediate road safety audits along the deadly highway.
