Three suspects have been arrested in connection with a sophisticated fraud scheme that allegedly siphoned more than Sh22.4 million from a savings and credit cooperative society (SACCO), in a case that has exposed the vulnerability of computerized financial systems to insider manipulation.
According to detectives from Imenti North, investigations uncovered an elaborate network that exploited the SACCO’s electronic financial systems to divert millions of shillings, leaving members counting losses.
At the centre of the probe is Allan Karani, the SACCO’s ICT Assistant Officer, who investigators believe played a key role in orchestrating the fraud. Detectives say the scheme involved the manipulation of the institution’s computerized systems to facilitate the illegal transfer of funds.
Further investigations revealed that bank accounts linked to Tony Mwenda, Sharon Kendi, Brivin Dentel, and Mawingu Plus Ltd were allegedly used as channels for receiving and withdrawing the stolen money.
The first breakthrough in the case came on June 4, 2026, when detectives arrested Tony Mwenda and obtained custodial orders to facilitate further investigations.
In a follow-up operation conducted on June 10, 2026, detectives arrested Allan Karani, Betty Kanana, and Sharon Kendi. During the operation, officers recovered several mobile phones and a company laptop, which have since been seized for forensic examination.
Investigators believe the fraud was carried out through a coordinated conspiracy involving multiple suspects who exploited the SACCO’s electronic systems for personal gain.
The three suspects are currently in police custody awaiting arraignment as detectives continue pursuing additional leads and possible accomplices linked to the theft.
Authorities have assured SACCO members and the public that investigations are ongoing and that all those found culpable will be brought to justice.
