Kitui Woman Representative Irene Kasalu is increasingly emerging as a formidable force in the county’s political landscape, with her grassroots networks and constant engagement on the ground positioning her as a key player in the 2027 governorship race.
Unlike many leaders who retreat after elections, Kasalu has maintained a consistent presence across villages, churches, and community forums — week after week, month after month. Her direct touch with constituents has not only boosted her popularity but also earned her recognition as one of the most approachable and people-centered leaders in Kitui.

With Governor Julius Malombe not expected to defend the seat in 2027, political analysts argue that the county is primed for a reshuffle of power. Already, conversations in Kitui’s political circles suggest that Kasalu’s name commands respect alongside other potential contenders such as Senator Enoch Kiio Wambua, former Governor Charity Ngilu, former Tourism Cabinet Secretary Peninah Malonza, and former ICT Principal Secretary Jonathan Mueke.

Kasalu’s strength lies in her deliberate grassroots mobilization strategy. From supporting women’s empowerment groups, to youth programs, to attending funerals and cultural events, she has built a loyal base that cuts across party lines. Her allies believe this ground connection gives her a unique edge over rivals who often rely on elite political endorsements.
“Kasalu has invested in people. She’s not a seasonal politician who only comes around during campaigns. That’s why she’s being taken seriously as a 2027 frontrunner,” said Peter Mutua , a political observer in Kitui.

But beyond ground mobilization, the biggest determinant in Kitui politics remains the Wiper Party factor. Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s influence looms large, with the Wiper ticket seen as the most decisive endorsement for any serious contender. Kasalu, a loyal Wiper stalwart who frequently shares platforms with Kalonzo both locally and nationally, is positioning herself as the natural heir to the party’s dominance in Kitui.
Senator Wambua is also a long-serving Wiper loyalist, while Ngilu, though a seasoned political heavyweight, has had a complicated relationship with Kalonzo in the past. Malonza, associated with President William Ruto’s administration, and Mueke, who has aligned with various national formations, may face an uphill task in a county where Wiper’s symbol carries heavy political weight.

As the road to 2027 heats up, one thing is clear: Irene Kasalu’s grassroots machinery, coupled with her closeness to Kalonzo Musyoka and the Wiper Party hierarchy, has already redrawn Kitui’s political map. Whether she ultimately secures the ticket or not, her growing influence is forcing both allies and rivals to rethink their strategies in what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive succession battles in the county’s history.
