Tension remains high in Kitui town after angry protesters blocked the road at Kalundu Bridge while demonstrating against the rising cost of fuel and the increasing cost of living in the country.

The protesters barricaded the road and lit bonfires at the bridge, bringing transport to a standstill and causing heavy traffic disruption within Kitui town.

Motorists, matatus, boda boda riders and other road users were left stranded as the demonstrators demanded immediate government action to lower fuel prices and reduce the economic burden facing Kenyans.

Authorities advised motorists heading to the Kitui Central Business District to avoid the Kalundu Bridge route and instead use the highway entrance into town as an alternative route.

Businesses around the affected area experienced disruption as fear and tension spread across parts of the town.
The protests come amid growing nationwide demonstrations over the rising cost of fuel, transport and basic commodities, with citizens expressing frustration over the worsening economic situation.

Security officers were deployed to monitor the situation as transport along the affected road remained paralyzed.
