Ten people have been left with serious injuries after a 32-seater matatu, in a terrifying high-speed crash, lost control and rolled multiple times at Kyumbi Junction along the Machakos-Mombasa Highway. The accident occurred when the matatu attempted a reckless overtaking maneuver on a personal vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and crash in a spectacle of twisted metal and shattered glass.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as nothing short of catastrophic, with passengers trapped in the wreckage, screaming for help. The driver of the matatu, reportedly speeding at the time, is said to have been unable to regain control, as the vehicle flipped several times before coming to a halt.

The Machakos County Director of Disaster Management confirmed that ten people were seriously injured, with some critically wounded, and rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for urgent treatment. Three passengers from the personal vehicle involved in the crash have been taken to Kyumbi Level 3 Hospital. The horrific incident has left the community in shock as the festive season approaches.

This accident is yet another reminder of the deadly consequences of speeding and reckless driving, as calls for road safety reach a fever pitch. It comes as the nation is grappling with a rise in road accidents, with authorities on high alert.

The Grim Reality of Road Safety in Kenya

This tragedy is part of a larger, alarming trend. In 2024 alone, Kenya has seen a shocking rise in road accidents, with over 20,000 accidents recorded by November, including 4,047 fatalities. These numbers represent an increase in both accidents and deaths compared to previous years, and the festive season, when millions of Kenyans hit the roads, only exacerbates the risk.

The shocking reality is that most of these accidents are preventable, caused by reckless driving, overspeeding, and disobedience of road safety laws. Motorcyclists, pedestrians, and passengers have borne the brunt of this carnage, with many lives lost unnecessarily.

As the nation braces for the peak of the holiday season, road safety campaigns have been launched, but many are questioning whether they are enough. The authorities have intensified efforts through the “Usalama Barabarani” campaign, calling for strict enforcement of traffic laws, yet these deadly incidents continue to unfold.

    A Wake-Up Call for Drivers

The Kyumbi Junction crash serves as a chilling reminder of the dangers on Kenyan roads. Authorities are urging all drivers to take extra care, avoid reckless overtaking, and stick to speed limits to avoid becoming part of these statistics. As the festive season continues, the question remains: How many more lives will be lost before real change takes place on our roads?
