Six school-going children have lost their lives in a tragic hit-and-run accident at Wiitu Shopping Center along the Kitui-Kibwezi road on Thursday evening.
According to police, the driver responsible has been arrested and the vehicle impounded.
Speaking to Channel 15 News, Ikutha Police Commander Raphael Mutiso confirmed the heartbreaking incident. He revealed that three of the victims were primary school pupils, while the other three were secondary school students. The children were struck as they attempted to cross the road at Wiitu Shopping Center.
The bodies of the deceased have been transported to Mutomo Level 4 Hospital Mortuary. The tragic event has sparked calls from the local community for the installation of a zebra crossing at the busy shopping center to enhance road safety and prevent such accidents in the future.
